Carmarthen Open Meet 2018

It was a very productive day at the Carmarthen Christmas Meet for the swimmers of Bridgend County Swim Squad.
The medals came thick and fast - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Personal best times were being achieved in nearly every race by every one of our swimmers - it could be close to a 95% success rate!!
More importantly we had 70 swimmers competing - a superb turn out - and the team atmosphere was exemplary. Team mates were supporting each other and the relay teams had the best vocal support we have ever heard, both from poolside and from the parents in the spectator gallery. Thanks everyone for shouting!!!!!
There were fabulous swims from everyone from BCSS which resulted in us winning the Best Visiting Club Award. Thoroughly deserved!!!
Many thanks to coaches Matt & Ben for getting the swimmers to this level of performance. Thanks to Lisa & Collin for helping the team on poolside.
And thanks to our officials - old & new - who helped make the event a memorable one. Well done guys!!!

Swim Wales 2018 Winter Championships Head Coach report here

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this year's Club Championships. It was a very busy weekend for the swimmers, parents, officials and volunteers. There were a high number of Personal Best times achieved in many of the events and in all strokes. We had a high number of swimmers who were competing for the very first time - well done for making such a brilliant effort!

Aberafan Leisure Centre was once again the venue for our annual competition and, apart from a few niggles with the electronics, we had a great weekend as guests of Celtic Leisure.

There are too many people to thank but we'd like to mention Adrian and Eve Edwards, along with Luke Hart who guide us and advise us on the Technical details of competing. They are always a huge help.

Congratulations must also be given to all the new Timekeepers who qualified over the weekend. Next step will be the Judge Level 1 course!!

Team bonding day at Liquid Leisure

It was an early start for everyone as they made their way to Liquid Leisure near Windsor and a day of fun on the water. 43 swimmers and parents tackled the wet conditions and the floating obstacle course. Some of the more adventurous (or crazy!) took a ride on the Banana boats and tried to hold on for the bumpy ride. Glad you all had a great day. Many thanks to Lisa Pugh for organising the trip

Mike Pett

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Club Secretary and Development Coach Mr Mike Pett, following a short illness.
Mike will be hugely missed by everyone in the club and our thoughts and prayers go to his family at this time of sorrow.
He was a true gentleman who had the interest of the club at heart. The time and dedication he gave the young swimmers of Bridgend County over the past 37 years is testament to the type of man he was.
His dedication to swimming could only be matched by his love of bees and his quest for the perfect jar of honey.

We will miss you Mike, rest in peace.

Hedd, perffaith hedd.
Peace, perfect peace.

News Update

It's been a very busy 2016 season once again and success has been high on the agenda.  The recent Welsh Summer Championships saw a number of swimmers pick up medals throughout the week, taking on and beating a lot of stiff competition from clubs across the border. It was also really pleasing to see the number of swimmers who achieved Personal Best times (some that have been two years in the waiting!!). The girls smashed the Backstroke events with 4 Gold, two Silver and a fourth place.

I'm sure that everyone involved with BCSS was proud to see Helen Jenkins competing at the Rio Olympics. Helen has worked hard over the years and is a perfect role model for all our swimmers. She sets the standard in regards to the level of commitment, training and her competitive spirit. Well done Helen.

12 BCSS swimmers attended the British Nationals at Sheffield. Rebecca Sutton, Eleri Davies, Grace Morgan, Emily Ezard competed in the 20 Free Relay. Emilia Stevenson, Rebeca Sutton and Ioan Evans competed in individual events. Ioan became the British Champion in the 100m Backstroke and gained a Silver medal in the 1500m Free - a brilliant result. Rebecca gained Bronze medal in the 200 Backstroke, setting a new Welsh record. Five swimmers competed in the ASA Open Water Championships.

Torfaen Short Course Meet 2016

The recent Torfaen meet was another big success for Bridgend swimmers with many of them picking up medals and most of them achieving big Personal Best times in their swims - well done to all of you!

Top of the list were Max Geysen-Holley and Phoebe Williams-Jones. Max won the Best Boy title and Phoebe was the Best Girl, both in the 9-10 age category. This is a great result and shows that these two are working hard in the pool and getting the results - well done Max and Phoebe!

Thanks to the Volunteers

Many thanks to all those who attended the Annual General Meeting on Tuesday night. It was felt to be a very positive meeting and it was encouraging that so many people came forward to fill the various positions needed to create a larger committee, made up of parents from both squads. We are still looking for parents of the Development Squad swimmers to volunteer as Squad Reps so if you are interested please email to register your interest.
Many thanks,
BCSS Committee

Bridgend swimmers enjoyed an evening out of the pool on Wednesday 22nd June, scaling to new heights at Boulders Indoor Climbing Centre. Youngsters from both the Performance and Competitive Skills Squads worked together to help each other reach the top of the climbs. They even had to climb one wall blindfolded and relied upon their team to guide them to the top. Great effort from everyone - well done!

Congratulations to Craig Thomas on achieving first place in the 400m Free and second place in the 200m Free at the  European Masters Competition at the London Aquatic Centre in a very good time of 4.09 & 1.56. Well done Craig.

Also to Garfield Thomas who achieved Bronze medal in both the 100m Butterfly  and 100m Freestyle events. He also gained 5th place in the 400m Freestyle. A phenomenal result for a 76 year old youngster - well done Garfield.

Ioan Evans gained 7th position in the Open Water competition in Majorca with another swim yet to come. Well done Ioan and good luck in the next race.

International Success

Congratulations to Emilia Stevenson and Rebecca Sutton who represented the Swim Wales Elite and Youth team that competed in the “FFN Golden Tour 5th Meeting Open Mediterranee” on the 4-6th March in Marseille, France. Both swimmers continue to perform to their usual high standards. Well done girls.

Congratulations also to Ioan Evans on his selection for the British Open Water training camp in Mallorca. Ioan has always been a strong swimmer in the sea and his experience with the Lifeguards has been extremely helpful in gaining his place on this training camp. Well done Io.

Training Camp News

Looking lovely and warm at the Performance Training Camp at Fuerteventura

SEW Regional Competitions

Congratulations to all Bridgend County Swimmers who competed at the South East Wales Regional Competition over the past two weekends. Many swimmers have achieved personal best times in many events and once again it's been a successful meet for medals - we'll give you an update when we make the final count.

The competition was rounded off with Bridgend County Swim Squad entering a team for each of the Relay events, with extremely strong swims in many of the races. Well done to all the swimmers involved. Pictured are some of the Bridgend Boys & Girls Relay teams. Please send any other photographs to

Ynysawdre Swimming Pool Update - Development Sessions

We have had notification this afternoon that the screed is damaged and needs to be hacked off and re-laid. It's therefore going to be closed longer than anticipated.
However on the plus side, we should have a problem free pool at the end of it.

Message from Mike Pett - Development Coach

Due to the continued upheaval at Ynysawdre Swimming Pool BCSS Development swimmers have been given alternative sessions to attend.
These are available at Maesteg on Sunday mornings (9am to 10.30am) and Tuesday evenings (7pm to 8pm and 8pm to 9pm).
There is also a Tuesday session at Pyle (7pm to 8pm).
The only other alternative sessions are on Friday evenings at Pyle and Pencoed - however these are not suitable for all levels of development swimmers.
Regrettably HALO have not been able to offer the Club alternative sessions to completely fill the gap at Ynysawdre, so we are just having to live with the situation meanwhile.
I am currently attending the Pyle sessions.

Bridgend swimmers at the Urdd
Saturday, 23rd January, saw the younger swimmers represent their respective Primary Schools at the Urdd Gobaith Cymru National Swimming Gala
It was the turn of the Secondary school students on Sunday.

Many apologies if we missed someone from both photographs - Owen Leach was actually on the blocks ready to start his relay race!! Results have been added to the Results Page

Bridgend County Swim Squad would like to thank Talk Training for sponsoring the club. Talk Training is a Treforest-based company specialising in providing commercial training solutions and employability programmes to a wide range of businesses. The company has helped promote the achievements of BCSS and its swimmers by placing an article on its website outlining the successes of individuals and the team over the past year. Many thanks to Talk Training for the donation. To see the article in full, please click on the image.

Twelve year old Morgan Sweet spent part of his Christmas holidays using his swimming skills to raise £1000 for charity. Read his full story on this link to The Bridgend and Porthcawl Gem newspaper. Well done Morgan - keep on training and you'll soon hit the 4 mile mark!

Swim Wales Winter Short course

Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed at the Swim Wales Short Course Winter Championships at Swansea on the 18th - 20th December, 2015. Bridgend Swim Squad once again showed that it is full to the brim with talented swimmers who gained a record number of medals. A total of 46 medals of various colours were won by Bridgend swimmers - a fantastic result!

Arena League 2015

The National Arena Swimming League - Western Division competition, was a tough encounter for Bridgend at the end of 2015. The first two rounds for the Premier division were held at Millfield School, in Street, Somerset. The team gave a magnificent performance in both rounds and gained third position in both meets and, once again ensuring their place in the Western Division Final.

It was a tough final where Bridgend swimmers competed against teams from Plymouth, Cardiff, Millfield and Swansea. Everyone gave everything they had, with many achieving Personal Best times, resulting in the team being placed 7th in the Premier Division, once again an improvement on previous years. Well done to Bridgend's Arena League Team 2015.

As usual, the Arena League competition couldn't function without the assistance of experienced and knowledgeable officials that help make the occasion such a success. Bridgend's officials were Kate Ashton, Jayne Rees and Wayne Rees. They smiled throughout the competition - even when some of the swimmers from other teams were rude to them!!

The team was well-supported by its travelling army of loud parents who were their usual vocal selves, but some seemed quite surprised to have their photo taken for a change!

Bridgend's Arena Officials  2015   Did we startle you?
Warm up can certainly get busy! Smile, you're on camera! Ready to go!!

Inter Counties 2015

A number of Bridgend swimmers were selected to represent  the Swim Wales West Region at the Inter Counties Regional Competition in Sheffield in November. The team came first overall and were promoted back into Division 1. The swimmers were : Zayd Abdulmajed, Holly Evans, Megan Nicholas, Katie Rees, Ioan Evans, Rebecca Sutton & Olivia Compton.
Sponsored swim -

A big thank you to all the swimmers (and volunteers) who participated in the Sponsored Swim. It was fantastic to see so many swimmers taking part - 23 in all who managed to swim 83150 meters in one hour - over 51 miles which is an unbelievable achievement!

The event was a great success and hopefully lots of funds will be raised for the 2016 training camps.

Bag packing

Once again, Maesteg businesses and communities have shown how kind and generous they can be, showing their significant and generous support for some of the borough’s talented athletes.

Bridgend County Swim Squad would like to thank the people of Maesteg and surrounding area for their recent support at their bag packing and tombola event on Saturday 19th September at Tesco, Maesteg.

Bridgend County Swim Squad training camps for 2016 will be in Fuerteventura (for performance squad swimmers) and London (for competitive skills squad swimmers).  Performance swimmers will undertake some 80,000 meters on their camp with the skills swimmers undertaking a lesser distance.  These training camps are intense training which will hopefully enable our swimmers to progress to the next level, just like our past and present Olympic and Commonwealth Welsh competitors.  Eight of our twenty four of performance swimmers are current members of the Welsh National Squads, an amazing achievement for a relatively small squad by comparison to the likes of Cardiff and Swansea.

The Squad raised an amazing £540 at this event which will provide significant help for the camps.

Donations were provided to the Swim Squad from the local traders in Maesteg – the swimmers would like to say a very big thank you to the following businesses.

Simply Pancakes · Go Bananas · Travellas · Occasions Inspired by Natalie · Sweet Delights · Louchi’s Tearoom · Café 21 · Man · Gwyn Richards · Vibe Hairdressers · Sparkle Box · Michaels Hairdresser · Splitz · Cwtchi Mamas  · Andrew’s Butchers · Mad Caps · Lucy’s Nail Bar · Anturio Gifts · Me:Me · Imperial Café · Tracy's Sweet Creations ·     Turf n Surf  · The Candle Corner · Weatherspoon · Iced Cake Parlour · Lizzy’s Candy

Ladies Night

The ladies of Bridgend Swim Squad held a very successful fundraising event on 4th November at The Grove Golf Club, Porthcawl.

There were a number of fantastic shops displaying their lovely products and handmade gifts, all with a hint of Christmas to get everyone in the festive mood.

The event was well attended with many traders offering beautiful cakes, sweet gifts, handmade chocolate truffles, jams honey & chutney, drift wood gifts, clothing, scarves and bags, jewellery, artists and make-up & beauty products to name but a few.

A huge thanks must be given to The Grove Golf Club who gave the venue free of charge and also to everyone who turned up to support the evening. Family and friends were invited, cajoled and press ganged into coming along to support the event which proved to be a huge success. with all funds raised from the ticket sales, table space and raffle going towards the two training camps.

The biggest cheer must go to Sarah Morgan who worked tirelessly to get the event up and running, organising everything from ticket and poster design to rallying supporters and traders - thank you Sarah!

Bridgend County Swimmers shine in Welsh Championships

The last month has been a very productive period for the swimmers of Bridgend County Swim Squad.  A strong contingent attended the Swim Wales National Championships at the National Swimming Pool in Swansea and came away with a large haul of medals. The competition was interrupted due to an overhead light breaking and glass going into the pool, causing a Health & Safety hazard. This forced the organisers to run the competition over two weekends but this didn’t deter the Bridgend swimmers who remained fully focused on the task ahead.

Their extraordinary efforts were rewarded with a medal tally of 24 Gold, 19 Silver and 23 Bronze. This exceeded last year’s tally by 29 medals and was once again a record number of medals for the squad. Gold medals went to, Katie Rees, Bethan Sloan, Grace Morgan, Ioan Evans, Rebecca Sutton, Emily Morris, Olivia Compton and Emily Hoare. Bridgend also have 22 swimmers ranked in the top 3 in Wales. This is an amazing team achievement and compares favourably with the bigger clubs in Swansea and Cardiff.

Two of Bridgend’s swimmers will soon be travelling across the world to represent their country. Rebecca Sutton from Cornelly, Bridgend and Emilia Stevenson from Aberdare recently had some great news as they have both been selected to represent Wales at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa in September.

Rebecca’s selection came from an amazing week at the London Olympic Pool where she won 5 British National Titles in the 100, 200 and 400 metres Freestyle, and also the 200 and 400 metre Individual Medley. This achievement also puts her in contention to be selected for the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia. The previous week saw Rebecca break the British Record for the 400 Individual Medley at the Welsh National Championships – a fantastic achievement that helped her win the Rowland Jones Cup for being the best swimmer at the competition.

Emilia achieved some great swims at the Welsh Championships in Swansea catching the eye of the Welsh team selectors and her talent in the Freestyle was put to the test in some very hard races.  Emilia has been in the club for a number of years and is a fine example of the commitment and endeavour that swimmers need to succeed. Emilia travels from Aberdare to Bridgend each day to further her development as a swimmer and this shows the level of determination needed to be at the top of her sport.

Congratulations are also extended to Helen Jenkins (2008 & 2011 World Triathlon Champion) who recently returned from injury to compete in Cape Town. Helen is also a member of the Bridgend County Swim Squad.

Emilia Stevenson and Rebecca Sutton who are destined for the Youth Commonwealth Games in Samoa.

Bridgend County Performance Squad  - The older members of the squad display the medals that they won at the Welsh Championships, along with Head Coach Phil Melhuish.   Bridgend County Competitive Skills Squad – The younger swimmers of Bridgend are also keen to show off their medal haul with Coach Kerry Dobbin. British Record Holder Rebecca Sutton holds the Rowland Jones Trophy alongside Head Coach Phil Melhuish.

Bridgend County swim squad finish season with Great performances at the British Championships in Sheffield and Welsh Summer Nationals in Swansea.

Bethan Sloan had a great swim in the final of the 200m breaststroke in the British Youth Championships were she came 5th in a personal best time. The time achieved  puts  Bethan  in the top two in Wales in the event for the senior age group, with fellow teammate Sara Lougher number one in the 100m Breaststroke event.  Sara chose not to swim in the British Nationals as she was selected to swim in the American Nationals in August with the Welsh Senior Squad .  Sara flies out to America on the 4th August. Good luck Sara!

In the British age group championships Bridgend had three swimmers competing in their first British Nationals where they did a great job.  Laura Ashton and Katie Rees had many events and Zoe Mountjoy had the 100m breaststroke to swim.  The best results came from Laura Ashton who was finished 8th in the 800m freestyle in a best time, and Katie Rees finished 11th in the 200m Breaststroke again in a best time.  Katie missed a place in the final by 0.4 seconds but was happy with the swim.  Zoe Mountjoy was the youngest swimmer to compete . After a slip on the  blocks on the start, she tried her best but finished down on her best swim time.  She then travelled to Swansea to swim in the Welsh Championships where she achieved a best time in the 800m freestyle. This took a lot of determination.

Chloe Laforges swum great at the  Summer Welsh Nationals winning the 50m breaststroke and butterfly achieving silver medals in the 100m breaststroke and 100m butterfly .  All her swims were best times .  Other medallists were Kieran Mackenzie who won a gold in the 1500m freestyle in a best time and Billie Jo-Barrow and Rebecca Sutton who gained silver medals in the 100m freestyle  and 200m individual medley respectably.  Bronze medallists were Anna Morgan and Ffion Wareham who achieved the medals in the 800m freestyle event.  Top ten finishes came from Owen Leary , Megan Nicholas  Imogen Hunt, Jessica Sutton, Zoe Mountjoy, Lily Hines, Ffion Wareham, Billie Jo-Barrow and Anna Morgan.

At this meet we achieved over 70% of Personal best times, so keep up the good work.

Lastly, Olympian Helen Jenkins’ last training session with Bridgend County will be on the 31st July where she then leaves for the Olympics on the 1st August.  Helen will compete in the Triathlon on the 4th August.  Bridgend County Wishes Helen good luck for the Olympics!!!!

Aoife Tarpey and Gwen Bennett, two 8 year olds in the Development team are making the lengths they swim during the squad sessions count by taking up a fundraising challenge to swim the channel.... in the pool!! They started last month and they have twelve weeks to swim 22 miles or 1416 lengths of a 25 metre pool; to keep on target they must swim 120 lengths a week. They are hoping to raise £150 each for the charity Aspire who provide practical help to people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injuries. To spot them in the pool they are the ones wearing pale lime swim caps with the Aspire logo on them!!! To read more and to follow their progress visit the website's

If you would like to  help them raise some money you can donate online at it's also not too late for you to sign up and join in and make your lengths count!!

Gemau Cymru – 06 July 2013

An enthusiastic Bridgend County Swim Squad attended Cardiff for the Gemau Cymru 2013.  The swimmers gave up their time on a beautiful Saturday to represent the club and can be proud of their efforts.

It was fantastic to see so many of the younger members of the squad competing at such a level and they were rewarded with plenty of Personal Best times.

Congratulations to Ben Dickson-Jardine, Chloe Wilshire, Hannah Jenkins and Owain Cook for making finals.  A big well done to Rebecca Donnelly, Olivia Compton, Imogen Hunt, Hannah Sloan and Rhiannon Haines for winning medals.

They showed great composure and determination to compete with the best in Wales.   It is excellent news for the sport in Bridgend as our team of coaches continue to produce extremely talented athletes of the highest calibre.
